HS Football – Last Regular Season Game
I tried something new at the Pomona and Arvada West football game Friday night. Something I never thought was possible. Something I never thought MaxPreps would accept. I shot the first quarter of the game, which started at 7pm, without flash. Not only without flash, but at ISO 12,800. No way would this work. I had to shoot at ISO 12,800 just to get a 1/640th of a second shutter speed so I could under expose a bit, but still keep my shutter speed fast enough to somewhat stop action. I needed to under expose some so when I brought the blacks back in post it would take care of some of the noise in the blacks. And you know what? Shooting RAW, and tweaking a bit in Adobe Lightroom, it worked! The first 4 images bellow are all at 12,800 ISO. But then, after the first quarter I jumped back to ISO 800 and flash, but it was sure nice to shoot a night game without flash, even for just one quarter.
Pomona dominated the first half of this game and went on to beat the Wildcats 31 to 20. Amazingly, Arvada West, going 2-3 in league and 4-5 over all will join the 8th ranked Pomona Panthers and the 10th ranked Ralston Valley Mustangs in the CHSAA 5A playoffs. Arvada West, a 27 seed will face 6 seed Cherokee Trail in a away game. Pomona, an 8 seed, will host 25 seed Fountain-Fort Carson at the NAAC and Ralston Valley, who came in at a 15 seed will host 18 seed Arapahoe also at the NAAC. Ralston Valley knocked Pomona out of the playoffs last year, and then fell in a semi final game, one win shy of heading to Sports Authority Field at Mile High, home of the Denver Broncos for the state championship.
Here is my 10 Shot from the game, and again, the first 4 images are taken in the first quarter at ISO 12,800.
