HS Girls Basketball – Panthers declawed

Things have sure changed in the last 12 months for Jeffco girls basketball.  A new coach for Arvada West, a former Pomona player now at Arvada West, but with those changes to the Wildcats, A-West is still struggling to find a path to the win column.  Pomona, is struggling to field a team.  Up until a game before this RV game, the Panthers were suiting up 9 players, but after a broken leg hit one of their strongest players, they came into the RV gym to face the 2nd place Mustangs with just three bench players.  It is not just A-West and Pomona struggling though.  Of the 9 teams in Jeffco, only Ralston Valley, Dakota Ridge and the first place Lakewood Tigers are over 500.

There is not a lot teams can do when new coaches come in, injuries, girls graduating or moving away.  It can be a struggle to find what works, and when a team struggles for a couple years, it can be difficult to get enough girls to come out for the teams.  Pomona’s JV team played the game right before Varsity and they just could not compete with the strong RV junior squad.  And with a struggling JV squad that also did not seem to have a full roster, you just can not pull girls up to Varsity without all but forfeiting the JV game.

Ralston Valley jumped out in the first quarter and took a 21-9.  It was not going to get any easier for the Panthers as the home team Mustangs kept up the offense in the second quarter adding another 20 points to the scoreboard while holding Pomona to just 4 points.  This gave the Mustangs a 41-13 lead at halftime.

Coming out of the locker room for the second half, the Mustangs started playing more of their young bench to get the experience.  Pomona was able to take advantage of that fact and put up their best two quarters.  It was not enough though.  Even with the Panthers scoring 11 in the 3rd, the Mustangs still added 16 points.  In the 4th quarter, Pomona scored more points than they did the entire first half adding another 15 points.  But it was no where near enough.  This gave the Panthers a final tally of 39 points and in the first half alone Ralston Valley had already beaten Pomona putting up 41 points.  The final ended up being 77 to 39 and a decisive win for the home team.

Here is my 10 Shot from the game.
