HS Hockey – Perfection

The Mullen Mustangs came into this game against Ralston Valley with only one win on the season that came against Summit 3 days earlier.  Ralston Valley, on the other hand, entered this game undefeated.  12-0 in league, 17-0 overall.  This was going to be a tough game for Mullen.

It was senior night for the home team Ralston Valley Mustangs.  Parents took to the ice with their seniors prior to the start of pre game warmups.  RV senior James Madok would get the start in goal, and while RV would sail to a 7-0 victory over Mullen, Madok’s teammates would not make it easy for him.  On two separate occasions, on a rare Mullen breakaway down the ice, ended up as a penalty shot for the visiting Mustangs.  As backup goalie for the Mustangs with not a lot of starts during the season, you had to worry that a single penalty shot would be hard t0 stop, let alone two free shots.  Madok stepped up and kept both shots away from the goal sealing the shutout for Ralston Valley.  This moved the defending state champions to 13-0 in league play and 18-0 overall with one more game to go.

Now, the next night was a busy one.  The Ralston Valley Mustangs basketball team was hosting Standley Lake and it was the hoopsters senior night, so I decided to shoot that game which started about an hour before the ice Mustangs would start their game against Steamboat Springs.  I did, however, head over to the APEX Center after the basketball game and was able to watch part of the second period to the end of the game and witnessed the Ralston Valley Mustangs finish the regular season at a perfect 19-0.  They will start the defense of their state championship as the number one seed during a double header at the APEX center next Friday as the playoffs start.
