10 Shot - HS Soccer - Standley Lake at Pomona

HS Soccer – Double OT

I went into this game expecting a blow out by Standley Lake.  The Gators have had a great season so far.  They were undefeated with a record of  7-0 going into this game and ranked 4th in the state.  On the other side of the field, Pomona has been struggling this season.  The Panthers came into this game with a 1-4 record, and not even in the top 100 in the state.

Standley Lake grabbed the early lead in the 11th minute of the first half, and was dominating, controlling the ball most of the first 40 minutes.  In one of the few times Pomona got the ball down in front of the Gators goal, a weak shot was taken by a Panther and the slow roller, which appeared to just roll past the Gators goalkeeper in a moment of misfortune.

So the game was tied, the Panthers had adjusted their defense for the rest of the game and was able to keep the Gators out of the goal.  The game was rough, with a lot of shoving and pushing as players battled for control of the ball.  There is no love loss here.  Arvada West and Ralston Valley combine with Pomona and Standley Lake for some good rivalries, but this Pomona and Lake game showed a lot of aggression.  And it was not all their fault.  A couple questionable offsides calls took the advantage away from Standley Lake.  Tied at 1-1, the game went into overtime.  In the first overtime, it appeared to everyone that Lake had the game won as a beautiful pass was sent down field as a forward for the Gators took off.  Everyone, Pomona included, new this was a clean pass, and the ball sailed into the back of the net for the game winning goal, until the side official put his arm up calling a delayed offsides.  Lake fans really let the officials have it, and while I have no direct ties to either school, I have to admit, from my vantage point (even with the official), Standley Lake was about 3 or 4 yards onside when the pass was made.  Too bad.  So, with that goal called back, we headed into a second overtime.  7 minutes into the second OT, Pomona floated a shot up into the air that sailed just over the fingertips of the Gators goalie that just missed the upper crossbar and hit the back of the net for the game winning goal.  Pomona had just done the unthinkable and defeated the top ranked Gators and handed Standley Lake their first loss of the season.
