HS Volleyball Pink for Cancer

I was very impressed Wednesday night at Ralston Valley.  The NFL, MLB, colleges and so many high school teams, football, softball, soccer, and volleyball are doing pink games to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness, which is a great cause.  Ralston Valley High School Volleyball took it a step further this year for their Think Pink night during the game against Arvada West.  While it was a pink night, with pink t-shirts, posters, and ribbons everywhere, it was not just for Breast Cancer Awareness.  The Volleyball team went a step further focusing on all cancer.  After the loss of beloved volleyball coach/teacher Lisa Nelson at RV to cervical cancer earlier this year, and with assistant volleyball coache Lonnie Newton currently fighting reoccurring cancer and senior varsity player Janelle Feldmann a cancer survivor, the team decided to focus on all cancer and not just breast cancer.  Along with the gym all in pink, the team had a auction going with all proceeds going to Coach Nelson to assist with finances during his current fight with cancer.

With all the pomp and circumstances over, we still had a volleyball game to play, and it was all Ralston Valley.  The Mustangs took the first game 25-19.  The Mustangs then dominated the visiting Arvada West Wildcats in the second game, winning 25-11.  Ralston Valley would sweep the night with a 25-19 win in the third game to win the match 3-0.  Arvada West had a hard time matching up with the Mustangs, but a bright spot for the Wildcats was the play by senior Lindsey Swenson, who had the most consistent play for A-West.  She was tough on serves, and was strong at the net with attacks, but she could not carry the entire team on her own.  And to be clear, Arvada West played well, Lindsey was just the standout player for the Wildcats on this night for me.

It was a tough game to shoot.  Tougher than normal.  With the Pink Night crowd, there was little space in the stands to get up high, and the front row was packed with students and staff on one side and parents on the other side.  Even the end lines were packed with people.
