10 Shot – NCAA Basketball – Washington at Colorado

NCAA Basketball – Payback on my Dawgs

It was not long ago that the Colorado Buffaloes were a threat not only in the PAC-12, but as a potential power in the NCAA Tournament.  Ranked strongly in the top 25 the Buffaloes went on the road and narrowly escaped the Palouse with a win over Washington State.  Then, as they faced my Puppies of Montlake the season outlook changed drastically.  The Dawgs were really taking it to the Buffaloes but one of the weirdest things I have ever seen happened to the star of the Buffaloes.  Spencer Dinwiddie was bringing the ball up the court.  Not really a fast break, but he was pushing it up pretty quick.  He stretched his body out to send a bounce pass to the wing and as he stepped, he collapsed to the floor.  Season ending injury to his knee.  No one touched him, he did not hit his knee on another player, nothing out of the ordinary.  Just stepping into a bounce pass and he was out.

The Buffaloes lost that game to UW, and then started struggling in the Pac-12.  Still strong at home, they were not the same team and they fell out of the top 25.  Other players have stepped up their play, which has helped the Buffaloes, but right now it will be a miracle if they make the NCAA Tournament.

I was excited to shoot my Huskies.  The first time I shot them was in my black and white film days when Eldridge Recasner was playing.  The next time I was able to cover the Huskies was in 2004 when they won the Great Alaska Shootout lead by Brandon Roy and Nate Robinson.  Over the years I have had friends play on the team like Bryant Boston, and during pick up games at the outdoor court (Denny Court?) during the summers in the 1990’s I played with and against a lot of Huskies.  But the big thing for me this game was getting to shoot a single player.  Number 40 for the Huskies.  The last time I covered ASU at the Great Alaska Shootout, I got to shoot the son of Seattle Sonics great Nate McMillan, who I had actually shot free throws with when he was like 6 years old.  But now, I was able to shoot the son of one of my favorite Sonics, and NBA players of all time.  I was at Greenlake when the Reignman broke the backboard in a pickup game (ending my day of basketball at the community center), and I had played in pickup games against him, but now I was able to photograph Reignman Jr.  Shawn Kemp Jr.  From what I had seen of him on TV, he was not the explosive player his dad was, but he had the potential there.  However, I do not know if it was the altitude in Boulder, or Kemp Jr’s Grave’s disease, which he was diagnosed with prior to the start of this season, or a combination of the two, but he just did not look that good.  In fact, my Huskies did not look good at all.  The Buffs took it to them hard and tough and my Dawgs fell to the Buffs.

Here is my 10 Shot from the game.  These photos are available for MEDIA USE ONLY through ZumaPress.

I really wanted to leave my 7D in my bag, but shooting with two cameras, the Classic 1D was not up to the lighting at the Coors Events Center, so I had to shoot with my 7D and 1D Mark II.  Anyone want to trade my a 1D Mark III for my 7D?
