2013 CHSAA 4A Girls Final Four

After shooting the boys Great Eight games at the Denver Coliseum last week, I headed to Boulder to shoot the 4A and 5A Boys and Girls Final Four and State Championship Games at the University of Colorado’s Coors Event Center.  Games started at 4pm on Thursday, but I headed up at 10:00 a.m. to install four strobes in the catwalks of the arena for the 12 games I would be shooting between Thursday and Saturday.

Adding the 4 strobes made all the difference in the world.  When I shoot the Colorado Buffaloes at the Coors under ambient light my settings are around 1/800th shutter speed at an aperture of f2.8 and a ISO of 2500.  With the strobes up in the catwalks, 1/250th shutter speed (Canon flash sync setting), and aperture of f4.0-4.5) and an ISO of 200.  The first day the strobes were giving me awesome light, but were not pointed just right.  Under the hoop and baseline I was out of the light fall for the strobes.  I made due and repointed them before Fridays games.

The four teams in the 4A Final Four were the Broomfield Lady Eagles, the D’Evelyn Lady Jaguars, and two Pueblo teams, the Pueblo South Colts and the the Pueblo West Cyclones.  All four teams were the #1 seeds in the brackets for the 4A girls.  Would we see a all Pueblo final?  Would we have a Jeffco vs Boulder County final?

The first game was D’Evelyn against Pueblo West.  The Cyclones from Pueblo took control of the game early, outscoring the Jaguars 11 to 7 in the first quarter, but for the final three quarters it was all D’Evelyn.  The Jaguars outscored the Cyclones 17-14 in the second quarter to trail by one at half.  In the second half, the Jaguars were on a mission, outscoring Pueblo West 14 to 8 in the third and 23 to 18 in the 4th to win the game 61 to 51 and advanced to Saturdays final game.

After a great first game, the second 4A girls game pitted the Pueblo South Colts against the Broomfield Eagles.

This was a great game.  After a high scoring 1st quarter, the Broomfield Eagles trailed the Colts by 3 with a score of 17-14.  Scoring calmed down in the second quarter, as the Colts from Pueblo South took a 22-21 lead into the locker room at half time.

Pueblo South led by 3 after three, and it looked like they were going to hold on to win the game, but Broomfield was not done yet.  In the fourth quarter the Eagles came back and tied the game forcing overtime in Boulder.  In overtime, Pueblo South was able to put three more points on the scoreboard than Broomfield, beating the Eagles 53-50 and advanced on to face D’Evelyn for the State Championship on Saturday.
