High School Soccer Colorado Style

So, Thursday night I had my first football game of the season (see next post).  It was going to take place at the North Area Athletic Complex at 6pm.  At 4pm at the same complex at the soccer stadium there was a boys high school soccer game.  So, I headed there early to shoot the soccer game prior to the football game.  We have had some beautiful days here, but come evening, clouds and rain have been coming in which it did tonight.  I went in with a plan to set up a remote behind one of the goals.

I arrived at the stadium, got down on to the pitch, and started pulling my gear out to set up and realized I left my camera remote adapter at home…so, no remote.

This game was weird to me.  First of all, I am not use to boys soccer in the fall.  To me, boys soccer players were usually the kickers on their high school football team.  Second, when the game started, the clock on the scoreboard was counting backwards, from 40:00, not 45 minutes, or counting up.  When the clock hit 0 a horn sounded, and the half was over.  No injury time, on field referee was not keeping the time at all.  That seemed really odd to me.  And finally, there were no linesman.  The officials on the sidelines with the flags pointing which way the ball was going when it went out of bounds.  Instead of linesmen, they had the main official that went all over the field, kind of in a diagonal direction, and then on each half, on the opposite sides of the field and half were assistant referees.  They hung out near the sidelines, called offsides, but would run out onto the field and blow whistles.  It just seemed weird.

Standley Lake was hosting Centaurus from Lafayette, CO, which is just about 10 miles northeast of Arvada.  The game started with some good play, but it started getting rough pretty quick.  The first half was dominated by Standley Lake, with most of the play down on the end I was shooting on.

The first real good look at a goal in the first half came as a Standley Lake player entered the box with just the keeper between him and the goal.  As he wound up for a shot on goal, a defender took him out from behind, earning Standley Lake a penalty kick which they would score on, taking a 1-0 lead.

Centaurus would tie the game up in the second half on a fluke goal.  It was a corner kick, that got passed the goalie, but no one touched and it slowly rolled into the goal.

Standley Lake would score another goal to take a 2-1 lead and win the game.  It rained a little on us, it was overcast, but overall I was happy with the images I got.  To view and purchase images from this game, please visit the MaxPreps Gallery for this game.
