2017 CHSAA Football Poudre at Pomona

The first round of the CHSAA 5A football playoffs visited the NAAC in Arvada, Colorado when Poudre traveled to face Pomona. Unfortunately for Poudre, they had suffered a tragedy prior to the game when a player was killed in an auto accident following a team function. But with heavy hearts they played, and played hard.

Pomona took a 14 point lead in the first quarter, and it looked like they had the game in hand, but some big plays from Poudre brought them back into contention for a brief period. Then Pomona took over, winning 68-27.

Here are some photos from the game. Both the Canon EOS 7D Mark II and 1D Mark IV performed outstanding. To view and purchase more, please visit MaxPreps.

2017 CHSAA Football George Washington at Standley Lake

Standley Lake hosted George Washington High for the second game of the double header on November 3, which was also the final game of the regular season to be played at the NAAC in Arvada, Colorado. Normally, going into a game like this, I would have said that Lake would have no problem, but the way they have played this season, it could easily have been an upset.

However, the Standley Lake Gators would prove to be victorious, handing the George Washington Patriots a 32-7 loss. Lake will head into the playoffs, but will not return to the NAAC for the post season, unless there is a major set of upsets.

Here are some photos from the game. All taken with the Canon 7D Mark II and Canon 300mm F2.8 IS at 10,000 ISO. To purchase these photos or view more to purchase, please visit MaxPreps.

2017 CHSAA Football Eaglecrest at Arvada West

On November 3, there was a double header football game at the NAAC in Arvada, Colorado to end the regular season. The Arvada West Wildcats hosted the Eaglecrest Raptors in the first game of the double header, and with a beautiful, sunny day, and a 4:00 start time, I was excited to, for the first time, try my Canon 300mm 2.8 IS lens with a 1.4x teleconverter.

The photo results were insane. With the combo I was able to sit just beyond the end zone end line and get almost all the way down to the other end of the field. I got right into the action, which, unfortunately, was all on Eaglecrests side.

The Raptors showed why they were the current number two team in the state, handing the Wildcats a 35-7 loss to close out the regular season. IF Arvada West can beat the number five ranked Fairview team on Friday, they should be back to the NAAC next week to face the number four Pomona Panthers in the second round. That would be a good game.

Here are some shots from the game, including a couple special ones for me. To purchase these photos or view and purchase more, please visit MaxPreps.

2017 CHSAA Football Rocky Mountain at Ralston Valley

My second time out with my new Canon 300mm 2.8 IS version I was a football game at the NAAC in Arvada, Colorado between Rocky Mountain and Ralston Valley. It was a fun game to shoot, and I think I am getting myself dialed in with this lens.

Ralston Valley had little problem with Rocky Mountain. The Mustangs would go on to win the game 34 – 9. While it was not a mercy rule blowout, it was for sure a one sided victory. One good note for Rocky Mountain though. Last season they won one game. This year, they finished with three wins. That is a good improvement, and hopefully they will continue to improve.

2017 CHSAA Football Heritage at Golden

On Friday, October 27, Heritage visited the NAAC in Arvada, Colorado to take on the Golden Demons. The last time these two teams faced off, Heritage blew Golden out. This was the frist time out for me with the basically brand new Canon 300mm F2.8 L USM IS Series I lens and I was blown away by it teamed up with the Canon EOS 7D Mark II.

Heritage took and early lead, but a fourth quarter touchdown by the Demons gave Golden a one point lead that held to the end of the game. Golden won their final home football game, 28 to 27.

The new 300, or new to me (watch for a video post about this lens on YouTube), was phenomenal and the only thing that took me a little to get use to was the lack of a zoom. Here are some photos from the game. To view or purchase more, please visit MaxPreps.

2017 CHSAA Boys Soccer Steamboat Springs at Golden

A first round soccer game between Steamboat Springs and Golden took place at the NAAC in Arvada, Colorado on October 25. Golden needed the win to move on in the soccer playoffs, but good defense by both teams and a long shot aided by the wind would decide this match.

Steamboat Springs received a first half free kick near midfield. Trying to get the ball on goal, hoping someone would get control of it for a shot, the ball was grabbed by the wind and sent the ball into the net, just past the goalkeepers hands. It was the only score of the game. Golden’s season was over.

This was a real test for me with the Canon 7D Mark II. It was my first soccer game ever shot at night without flash. I think I was around 10,000 ISO and that produced some wonderful shots. Here are some of the shots from the game. To view more, check out MaxPreps.

2017 CHSAA Football Rocky Mountain at Arvada West

Sorry this has taken a while to get posted. In the middle of changing my living situation and the blog has had to take a back seat for a couple days. On Thursday I shot a double header. The first game is here, but the second game was between Rocky Mountain and Arvada West, also at the NAAC in Arvada, Colorado. It was my first real test with the Canon 7D Mark II and the 1D Mark IV at night, and wow…they performed great.

Arvada West came out strong, but it was not a runaway win for the Wildcats. Rocky Mountain put up a good fight, but ended up losing by a score of 30-20. It was a good bounce back game for AWest after falling last week to Ralston Valley.

Here are some shots from the game. Amazingly, these were shot at 6400 ISO. I have heard the 1D IV will produce good files up to ISO 12800. Maybe I will try that a bit at tomorrows soccer game. For more shots, please visit MaxPreps.

2017 CHSAA Football Ralston Valley at Arvada West

On Friday night at the NAAC in Arvada, Colorado, the Ralston Valley Mustangs took on the home team Arvada West Wildcats. A battle of the 5A Mt. Wilson football conference, Arvada West was favored to win. The local NBC station deemed the contest the game of the week and were there to cover it, and as pre-game entertainment, four members of the Denver Broncos Cheerleaders were there to perform.

The first possession of the game it looked like Arvada West was going to dominate, taking the ball down the field on about 6 plays to score a touchdown. But then the Mustangs woke up. They tied the game and took a lead. The Wildcats would tie things up but Ralston Valley would go on to win 20-14.

The game started at 7:00 p.m. so, teamed with my Canon EOS 1D Mark II was a 580 EX II flash. I hate flashed football, but the colors sure do end up popping. Here are some of my shots from the game. To see more, visit MaxPreps.

2017 CHSAA Boys Soccer Arvada West at Chatfield

On Thursday, temperatures reached well over 70 and it was just gorgeous. The Arvada West Wildcats visited the NAAC in Arvada, Colorado to take on the home team Chatfield Chargers. Yes, the NAAC is like two miles from Arvada West and Chatfield is from Littleton, Colorado, which is quite a distance from the field. Makes sense to me.

Arvada West had little issue with Chatfield, scoring two goals in the second half. Chatfield had a couple chances, one a long shot saved by the crossbar of the goal. Arvada West won the game 2-0 to continue their undefeated conference play streak.

Here are some of my shots from the game. To view more, please visit MaxPreps. All shots with a Canon 1D Mark II and 120-300 Sigma 2.8 lens. My 7D is having issues focusing and is ready to go into Canon with my 70-200 2.8.
