After the 3A State Championship game won by Colorado Academy earlier, the weather started to take a turn for the worse. The decision was made to postpone the start by about a half an hour due to weather conditions. As Palmer Ridge and Battle Mountain took the field, the snow was coming down pretty good. It would fade a little, then come back strong. It was really turning into a crazy day.
I shot most of this game from midfield for two reasons. It gave me pretty good views towards each goal so getting both teams offense and defense should be easier, and it was closer to the stairs up to the media room where it was warm. The first half went scoreless, but there were attempts on goal both ways. Unfortunately, the wet ball, snow and ice on the field just kept things both slow and scoreless.
Going into the second half, the snow started coming down harder, and it was real cold now. The game went down to a shootout with both teams scoreless after regulation and two overtime periods. Battle Mountain was able to net 4 goals and Palmer Ridge was only able to find the back of the goal with two shots. Battle Mountain players and fans went nuts over winning the 4A state championship. While the awards were being handed out, the stadium got hit with a white out of blowing snow. Snow was starting to pile up on the field faster than the grounds crew could shovel it off the lines. The start of the 5A game was first postponed for a half hour (which was actually closer to an hour and a half because of the late start of the 4A game and the double overtime and shootout). But you could no longer see the field from the stands and the snow falling was mixed with ice and it was blowing sideways. So, the decision was to postpone the 5A game until Monday night. Unfortunately, I will not be able to cover the 5A game. Monday, today, happens to be my moms 88th birthday, and we are all going out for birthday dinner. BUT, there will be a MaxPreps shooter there.
So, Enjoy photos from the 4A championship, and check out MaxPreps to view and purchase more photos from this game.
