2013 HS Hockey – Resurrection Christian at Ralston Valley

I shot my last regular season high school hockey for the season the other night at the Apex center in Arvada as the hometown Ralston Valley Mustangs hosted Resurrection Christian.  The third place team from Resurrection Christian came into the game trailing the Mustangs in the standings by just one tie, so this was a big game for both teams.

Resurrection Christian jumped out in front during the first period, taking a 2-1 lead into the locker room.  They scored first, and Ralston Valley stayed tough.  The Mustangs played their game, skated well, passed the puck well, but Resurrection just was skating a little better.

The above picture is a little off in the lighting/colors.  I got to the arena late and the only excuse I had was that I was working on another project, a big project that I am getting excited about, but I am keeping it under wraps for now.   Regardless, I was late getting to the arena and had to rush to set my lights up and did not get them pointed just right….

In the second period, with Ralston Valley trailing the visiting team by one goal, both teams played great hockey.  No goals were scored in this period, but the fans that were in attendance were treated to some great play on the ice.

After the last hockey game where I had a puck try to take my head off, I can honestly say I was a little gun shy shooting over the glass, but I kept going.  Thankfully, no pucks came over the glass anywhere near me.

In the third period it was looking like it would be a comeback win by the Mustangs.  A goal in the third tied the game up and soon after a quick follow up goal gave the Mustangs a 1 goal lead over Resurrection Christian.  It looked good for the home team, but, with just a couple minutes left in the 3rd period, Resurrection Christian was able to tie the game up at 4 and force an overtime period.

Overtime!  This was the third game in a row for the Mustangs to go into a 4th frame.  In the first two overtimes they pulled off a victory, one at home against Standley Lake, and one on the road at Regis Jesuit.  So the Mustang fans were pretty confident in their team pulling out the win in OT.

But, it was not to be… for either team.  Neither the Mustangs or Resurrection Christian could find the back of the net in the extra frame and the game ended in a tie.  So, Resurrection Christian did not gain any ground on the Mustangs in the standings, and Ralston Valley remained in 2nd place.
