Welcome to March Madness! Saturday at the Coors Events Center in Boulder was Championship Day. 4 CHSAA State Championships would be decided for the 4A and 5A boys and girls. First up was the 4A girls with the Pueblo South Colts taking on the D’Evelyn Jaguars.

Both teams should be very proud to have made the final game after a long season that started back in December. It was a long road but they made it to the final game. No matter what the outcome, both teams had great seasons.

The game was close in the first quarter. The Pueblo South Colts jumped out to a 2 point lead after the first quarter with a 12-10 score. This looked like it was going to be a great game to start the day of finals.

The second quarter was a different story. Pueblo South started to shot that they wanted the win a bit more than D’Evelyn. In the second, the Colts started to overpower the Jaguars, winning the quarter with a score of 22-16 and taking a 8 point lead into the locker room at halftime.

With Pueblo South leading by a score of 34 to 26 going into the third quarter, D’Evelyn was going to really have to turn things up if they were going to have a chance at winning the championship. Would we see a stronger Jaguar team in the second half?

No. Instead of a stronger Jaguar team, we saw a stampede of Colts. In the third quarter, Pueblo South outscored D’Evelyn 19-10 to take a 53-36 lead into the fourth quarter. It was going to be tough for the Jaguars to make up a 17 point deficit in the final frame.

D”Evelyn was able to hold the Colts to only 13 points in the final frame, but part of that was because the Colts put all their bench players in so the starters could start enjoying the fact that they were on their way to a state championship.

Pueblo South held the Jaguars to only 6 points in the fourth and as the clock hit zero, the Colts from Pueblo South High School started celebrating their 2013 State 4A Basketball Championship with a 66-42 win over the D’Evelyn Jaguars.
