HS Soccer
For the second day in a row I had a overtime soccer game at the NAAC. This one only lasted part of the first overtime before Green Mountain netted the golden goal to defeat the Conifer Lobos. This was a tough game to photograph. Green Mountain was wearing black uniforms and Conifer were wearing whites and the sun was very bright. With a 4pm start time, the sun was low and throwing harsh shadows. Combine that with Black and White uniforms, it is difficult. You expose for faces, however, you end up losing detail in shadows or blowing out the detail in the white uniforms.
A tip for shooting in this situation, do not trust the camera meter. I use a handheld meter and take a reading of the direct sunlight, then I take a reading of the shadows and average those readings together (my meter does that itself). I plug those readings into my camera and take a couple test shots, check the LCD and the camera histogram, and adjust the shutter a tad if needed.
Another drawback, the white uniforms are very hard for the camera to lock focus on. So, to increase locking focus, I change my focal point to a higher point vertical and horizontal and try to keep the focus locked on the face of the player.
Hope those tips help you…
Here is my 10 Shot from the game.
