HS Girls Basketball – Bears struggle against the Mustangs
Another struggling Jeffco team came into face the #2 Mustangs. Bear Creek suited up 8 girls to face Ralston Valley, and from the start of the game struggled against the deep Mustang team. Ralston Valley pressed to start the game and the Bears could hardly bring the ball past mid court. In the first quarter, the Mustangs doubled the 11 points Bear Creek managed, taking a 22-11 lead after the first 8 minutes. It was more of the same in the second quarter with Ralston Valley adding 24 to the Bears 10 taking a 46-21 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.
In the third Ralston Valley’s head coach Jeff Gomer took his teams 25 point lead as a opportunity to play his freshman squad for much of the quarter. RV has 4 seniors this season, 1 junior and 3 sophomores on the team, but in addition to those players, Coach Gomer has 6 freshmen on the Varsity team. Bear Creek was able to take a little bit of advantage with the Mustang freshmen, and actually outscored the home team 14-13 in the third quarter. The Bears were still trailing the Mustangs 59-35 going into the 4th quarter, and Ralston Valley picked up the pace for the final 8 minutes outscoring Bear Creek 24-12 and would win the game 83-47.
Hopefully the struggles that 2/3rds of the Jeffco teams are going through will take care of themselves. It is really tough for teams that do make it to the post season to compete with other leagues top teams when their league play is filled with teams that can barely field a team. I know every coach out there would love a full roster of basketball players, and hopefully they will come to you, because I would much rather see the Jeffco league title up for grabs by any of the 9 (10 next season I guess) teams all the way to the bitter end.
Here is my 10 Shot from the game.

I really wish I had rotated my camera to horizontal for the next photo, but it happened so quick…
