HS Girls Soccer – What a Game!
This game was starting off a lot better than the Thompson Valley and Golden game from 24 hours earlier. The sun was out and instead of warm winter clothing, jeans and a sweatshirt was all that was really needed. The wind was blowing pretty hard, and that would cause some issues, but it was a nice change from the day before.
This was an incredible game. The Ralston Valley Mustangs, ranked 4th in 5A Colorado Girls Soccer, were hosting the Chatfield Chargers in the first conference game of the season for both teams. Ralston Valley came into this game at 4-0 through the preseason while Chatfield finished non-conference play with a 2-1-1 record.
Chatfield fell behind in the first half, giving up a lone goal to Ralston Valley, giving the Mustangs a 1-0 lead going into halftime. The wind was playing a big part in this game as balls seemed to fly a little longer than some of the girls were expecting. Ralston Valley did not feel safe with just a single goal lead in the game.
Chatfield tied the game up with a goal in the second half. Ralston Valley was able to take a 2-1 lead on a penalty kick. Chatfield tied the game at 2 all and that is how regulation ended. We were headed to overtime.
Both teams battled hard in the first 10 minute overtime, however, neither team was able to find the back of the net for the golden goal and the win. So, we were off to a second, and final 10 minute overtime period. Near the end of this final 10 minutes, it looked like Ralston Valley was going to pull off a victory, however, a foul was called, negating a goal that at first pulled the Mustangs off the bench and onto the field in a premature celebration.
Chatfield, with just around 30 seconds left on the clock had a chance, but the Mustangs took the ball down the field. With two seconds on the clock, a collision between the Chatfield goalkeeper and Ralston Valley’s sophomore forward Emma Musson looked to end the game, except that Musson was able to flick the ball past Charger keeper Brittany Wilson and the ball hit the back of the net with half a second left in the game to give the Mustangs a 3-2 victory.
Here is my 10 Shot from the game.
