HS Hockey – Another #2 tries to knock off #1
After #1 Ralston Valley knocked off #2 Mountain Vista last week, a new #2 team was named, the undefeated Monarch Coyotes, who Ralston Valley defeated in the final of the State Championship Tournament last season. This looked like it was going to be a tough game for the Mustangs. Monarch started the game playing tough and attacking RV hard. But they were only able to get a couple shots off to RV’s 11 shots in the first period. Mustangs scored the first goal off of one of theses 11 shots. Soon after that score, it appeared that Monarch tied the game up on a long shot through traffic. RV goalie Zach LaRocque was trying to get his eyes on the puck when a Monarch player rocketed a shot that flew past LaRocque into the back of the net. One of the officials called it a goal, but lucky for LaRocque and the Mustangs, another referee waved off the goal due to a Coyote high stick.
It only got better for the Mustangs after that. In the second period Ralston Valley netted two more goals and held the Coyotes scoreless to take a 3-0 lead into the final period. RV netted their 4th goal in the 3rd period, but gave up the shutout in the final period as Monarch was finally able to score, but it was too little too late.
This was a rough game. A lot of penalties, but even while Ralston Valley found themselves down 3 men to 5 twice, they were able to hold off the Coyotes.
Here is my 10 Shot from the game.

This next photo did not go to MaxPreps, but I just loved the photo with all the Big Guys standing with the Honorary Mustang.
