HS Hockey – Back to the Grind
After the blowout against Valor a couple days earlier, I was a little worried for the Ralston Valley Mustangs, the defending state champs, as they took on the number two team in the state, Mountain Vista. There is a good chance these two teams will be meeting again at the end of the season for the state title.
Mountain Vista took control in the first period, scoring the only goal in the first 17 minutes of play. The Mustangs came back to tie the game before the second intermission, but something I have not seen before on any level of hockey. A Ralston Valley player on the bench got a 2 and 10. That is a 2 minute penalty, and a 10 minute major penalty. I do not know what he said or did, but it put him in the box for a quarter of the game.
In the third, the Golden Eagles took the lead, but RV fought back and tied the game 3-3 and we were headed to overtime. Now. I am already sick. Head congestion, sounded like I was hacking up a lung, and I am standing on a step stool to shoot over the glass….and now we go into overtime? Please….score quick….wow. My prayers were answered, and early in the OT period, Ralston Valley netted the winning goal. I packed up to go home and die.
I had to choose what to do the next night. The Mustang skaters were taking the ice again on Friday, and the hoopsters were taking the court at the same time at RV High School. And I was sick. I decided I needed to stay home, sit out both games and try to recoup from this cold. Saturday I started to get energy back, and Sunday, my cold is really breaking up. Nothing on tap Monday, but I am trying to figure out what to schedule for the upcoming week as the Buffs return to Boulder and RV has home games both on the ice and the hardwood.
Here is my 10 Shot from the Mustangs 4-3 overtime win against the Mountain Vista Golden Eagles.
