NCAA Basketball – The Crimson get a Wake Up Call
I was excited to photograph the game between the Buffaloes and the Crimson. Not because of the game itself, but because it was Harvard. One of my best friends from high school played for the Harvard Crimson in the early 90’s. Growing up in Seattle, I knew a lot of high schoolers that went on to D1 programs. So, when I get to photograph some of these programs, I try to find someone that was with the team that has been with the team for a while. No one traveling with Harvard was around when my friend Dan Morris was there.
Over the years, I have made new connections with people that either knew or played ball with my friends. I met someone with Stanford that remembered Peter Dukes, who graduated a year or two before me. Peter’s mom was a big influence on my photography. I also had a chance to chat with someone at Washington State University at the Great Alaska Shootout a few years back. They remembered the little brother of one of my friends. Tavares Mack, who played there in the mid 90’s. He was the little brother of Elgie Mack little brother. Elgie was, to this day, one of the best high school basketball talents I have ever seen.
I found out that Harvard was heading up to Anchorage for the Great Alaska Shootout. My turf. I talked the Harvard basketball SID. I gave him some information about the Shootout, Sullivan Arena, and the Anchorage area. Boston and Cambridge are pretty cold, so the weather should not be too much of a shock to them.
Harvard started off the game strong and continued this through the first half. Going into halftime the Crimson led Colorado by 12 with a 42-30 score. The Crimson continued holding their lead through the first 10 minutes of of the second half. Then the Buffaloes stormed the court. With about 10:20 left in the game, Colorado went on a 19-2 run. The Buffs took their first lead since the first thirty seconds of the game. Colorado was able to hold on to that lead and win the game 70-62.
The next two games are on the road in state for the Buffs. A trip to Air Force and then to CSU before coming home to face #2 Kansas on December 7th. Hopefully it will not be a day that will live in infamy for the Buffaloes.
Here is my 10 Shot from the game. These photos and more are available through Zuma Press for MEDIA USE ONLY.
