I photographed the Ralston Valley and Cherry Creek hockey game on Tuesday night at the APEX Center in Arvada. I was hoping for a good game after the last two Ralston Valley games I had photographed were blow outs by RV. The last game for Ralston Valley was a away game against Standley Lake which they lost 4-3, so I was expecting a good game here.

I showed up at the arena ready to try something new for high school hockey. I was all set to use a remote camera on the corner of the rink shooting through the glass. I had my mount ready, the camera with me, and once I got everything ready, I realized I left that camera’s battery at home. DOH! Next game I will have it up and running.

The first period was great. Both teams had good action going, but were held scoreless. It looked like this was going to be a close game with some good hockey action in it.

In the second period, things changed. Ralston Valley unloaded for 3 goals in the second, and only gave up one goal. It looked at times like Cherry Creek forgot how to handle the puck. A very different look from the 1st period.

When the third period started, Ralston Valley continued their dominance, adding 3 more goals to take a 6-1 win over the visiting team from Cherry Creek.

I got a little better coverage from my lights, but I was really disappointed in myself for forgetting my battery for my second camera. There seemed to be a lot of action in that one corner I planned on using it in. Figures. Hopefully when I do get the remote up, action will continue to happen there.

I kind of liked the shot above of the goalie from Cherry Creek on the ice. The look on his face was almost like…nobody saw that, right?

For the 2nd and 3rd period, Ralston Valley just dominated the puck. Even when on Power Plays, there was little Cherry Creek could do. I still think that RV is going to be the team to beat this season.

The shot above and bellow kind of made me laugh. I thought it was funny that I would get two shots of the puck floating in front of the goalie, but these two shots, taken 8 minutes apart, show that I did.

Cherry Creek had a lot of opportunities to score, they just either could not get the shots off, or missed the goal completely. It was too bad. It looked like the game could have been a lot closer, but RV controlled most of the game.
