On the second day of the CHSAA State Tournament Final Four games, I went in early to turn on my strobes and repoint them a bit to get a bit better court coverage. I was glad I did. With the boys there was a lot more action under the hoop.

Of course the first dunk I had of the tournament was by Valor Christian’s Chase Foster and he was going the wrong way showing me just his back (above). But I was happy with the light throw from the strobes and it looked like it was going to be a good game.

In the shot above you see Christian McCaffrey, son of the NFL’s Ed McCaffrey. Christian is considered one of the top high school athletes in the state of Colorado and you could see it in the way he ran. For a junior in high school he is very well conditioned, fast and strong. He was a very fun player to watch play.

This was the third time I had the opportunity to photograph the Valor Christian boys. They played in the Ralston Round up earlier in the season, and Foster (above) will be playing in the 2013 All Star game called The Show at the Pepsi Center before a Denver Nuggets basketball game.

I would really like to do a full recap of this game, but neither team has updated Maxpreps with the box score as of yet. So, recapping the quarters is impossible at this time. I can tell you, Broomfield had this game won. They led the entire game.

If my memory serves me right, the Broomfield Eagles had about a 10 point lead with just over a minute left in the game. The Broomfield fans began to chant “I Believe My Team Will Win” and the wheels on the bus came off. As the seconds ticked off the clock, Valor was catching up. Keeping Broomfield from getting near the hoop and grabbing baskets as quick as they could.

And when it mattered most to Broomfield, they gave up the lead and the buzzer sounded with Valor coming from behind to beat the Broomfield Eagles by a score of 75-74. While it was a loss for Broomfield, it was a great game. Probably one of the best basketball games I have photographed in 10 years.

I felt bad for Broomfield, but they gave the win to Valor Christian. They had the game in the bag. Without seeing the final game notes, and going off memory, with less than 10 second left and trailing by one point, Broomfield still had a time out (I believe), and they did not use it. I think, if they did have that time out, they should have called it and tried to set up some sort of play to get a halfway decent shot off.
