2013 CHSAA 5A Final Four – Legend at Denver East

In the first 5A game of the night, favorite Denver East Angels would host underdog Legend Titans at the Coors Event Center.  This would be an important game for Legend High School.  Seeded #5 in their bracket for the state playoffs, they shocked everyone with a one point win over Fairview, who was a favorite for the final game.  The only 5 seed to make the final four in Boulder, could Legend keep up their miracle season?

The first quarter was huge for Legend.  Denver East, the oldest high school in Denver, may have been caught off guard by Legend.  The Angels had not seen the Titans during the regular season, and really did not get a chance to scout them until the Great 8 game the week before at the Denver Coliseum.

While the first quarter was close, Legend took the advantage.  The Titans outscored the favorite East Angels 14 to 12.  The Titan student section was going nuts and East realized that they could not take this 5 seed for granted.  Legend had earned some respect.

But, as the second quarter started, Legend was not out of it.  They did not win the quarter, but they played a respectable 8 minutes, holding East to 12 points while adding 10 points of their own.  Both teams went into the locker room at halftime knotted up at 22 apiece.

After the halftime break, Denver East took over.  The Titans halftime pep talk just was not enough.  The Angels went on a scoring onslaught putting 20 points up on the scoreboard in the third quarter and held the Titans to only 11 points.

This gave the Denver East Angels a comfortable 42 to 33 lead.  It would be tough for the Titans to make up a 9 point deficit in the fourth quarter against this Angels team.

And, if Denver East would not have scored a single point in the fourth quarter, Legend still would not have been able to pull the upset.  The Angels held the Legend Titans to only 8 points in the final frame.  And the Angels did score, adding another 12 points to their score and taking the win and the first birth in the final game by a score of 58 to 45.

Legend should be proud and consider this season a victory.  Making the playoffs, upsetting the favorites, and making it all the way to the Final Four, for a school that has only been open for 5 years is pretty remarkable, especially for a fine arts high school.
